Onimusha: Way of the Sword Ending Explained – Final Boss and Post-Credits Scene

Onimusha: Way of the Sword ending has a satisfying plot twist waiting for you at the end. But before that, you need to know what happens in the final boss fight, and even before that, you should know what you’re dealing with to get there. So enough yapping. Here’s what actually happens before the final boss fight, all the way to the post-credits secret ending. (Spoiler alert, obviously!)

All Onimusha Ending Quick Answers

Here’s the summary of everything so you don’t have to read the whole guide:

The Man in White is Minamoto no Yoshitsune, and he’s the final boss of the last mission, “The Clash at Rendaino.” You fight him in three phases at the top of Shana-oh Castle, and in phase three he takes no damage unless you’re in Oni Awakening. Musashi wins and survives.

Dokyo then shatters the castle, releasing every soul trapped inside, and Musashi absorbs them all, which finally satisfies the gauntlet and lets it come off his arm. There is only one ending, no true ending and no branching paths, plus a short post-credits scene. Dokyo and Ganryu escape, so the story clearly isn’t over.

How to Reach the Onimusha: Way of the Sword Ending

“The Clash at Rendaino” is the last mission in the game. When you start it, you get an explicit point-of-no-return warning, then free roam shuts off for good. There’s a nice touch here too. The game opens with “The Ruckus at Rendaino” and closes with “The Clash at Rendaino,” same location, full circle.

By the time you reach Rendaino, Takamura is gone. It’s just you and whatever’s waiting in the castle. And let me tell you, there is a lot waiting for you inside.

But how did Takamura die? Well, Yoshitsune possessed Okuni’s body and used her to kill him, and she’s still carrying that. Before you set out, Musashi talks her down and hands the temple over to her. She takes up Takamura’s gauntlet and becomes the new Onimusha guarding the gate to Hell.

You start at Rokudo-chinnoji Temple, talking to Okuni. From there, you fight a stronger version of Benkei, then chase Yoshitsune into Shana-oh Castle (named after his childhood identity, Shana-o, by the way).

Then you climb it, floor by floor, and fight against bosses you’ve already beaten once, in this order:

FloorBossNotes
1DaidaraDeflect to drain stamina, then punish
2ByakueReached through a hell portal; watch the miasma
3Blue Nue + Red NueFought together
4Greater NueCut the tail to limit its attacks
5Enemy waves → Dohatsu-tenExtra Hozuki available here

Note: This is a long climb. Pace your healing items accordingly before you even reach the top.

The Final Boss Fight Against Yoshitsune

At the top of the castle, you finally face the guy who’s been running things since the opening cutscene: the Man in White, the one who forced the Oni Gauntlet onto Musashi in the first place, is Minamoto no Yoshitsune. I love this reveal because it’s been in plain sight the whole game, and it still fits perfectly. Literal chills!

He also finally explains what all of this was for. Yoshitsune’s motive is to fuse three things: the Oni power inside himself, the human souls Ganryu harvested, and the Genma souls you’ve been feeding your gauntlet for the entire game.

Put them together, and he becomes something beyond human, Oni, or Genma, powerful enough to rewrite reality however he likes. So he’s like Thanos with fewer Stones. But that’s the real sting of the reveal. You and Ganryu weren’t fighting his plan. You were collecting his ingredients.

The final boss fight has three phases, and yes, it’s brutal! It’s the longest and hardest boss in the game by a wide margin. Phases one and two play like a tougher version of everything you’ve fought already. In phase three, he takes zero damage unless you’re in Oni Awakening. Chain Issen counters or build the Blazing Gauge to fuel it, then unload everything the second you transform.

(I finished this on Action difficulty at just under 25 hours before writing any of this down.)

It’s also the payoff for Musashi’s whole arc. He spends the game rejecting the gauntlet’s power, then grudgingly leaning on it, and this fight is where that finally clicks into actually working with it instead of against it.

Who Is Shizuka and Why Her Goodbye Hurts

Before reading the ending, you should know Shizuka.

Shizuka is Shizuka Gozen, the Oni soul living inside Musashi’s gauntlet and the voice that’s been guiding him since the beginning. She’s also the one character in the game with a personal stake in the final boss: she and Yoshitsune were together, long before any of this.

The Oni once accepted Yoshitsune as an Onimusha, then had to imprison him in Hell when his hunger for power got out of hand. He got out, led the Genma against them, and took Hell for himself. Shizuka’s clan didn’t survive it. She escaped into the gauntlet. So the fight at the top of Shana-oh Castle isn’t only Musashi’s. She’s standing there watching the man she loved end.

(Curious who plays her voice? We’ve got the full English and Japanese cast here.)

Onimusha: Way of the Sword Ending Explained

After defeating Yoshitsune, Musashi tears him apart (arms first, then a lot of other places), and Yoshitsune loses his gauntlet. Then, he starts vaporizing like Voldemort, and Shizuka explains:

You removed yourself from the natural cycle. There is nowhere left to go. You will simply… cease to be.

Once Yoshitsune is gone, Shizuka’s soul, having done her deed for Musashi, leaves to set things right in hell, but she assures that she will be watching over him on his “path to greatness”. (I’m not crying. You are.)

All seems to be coming to an end when Dokyo shows up with Ganryu at her side and gloats that her plan worked, whether Yoshitsune survived or not. Then she shatters the entire castle, and every soul trapped inside it comes loose at once.

This is the moment Musashi stops fighting his own gauntlet. He takes all of those souls in; the thing’s endless thirst is finally satisfied, the marks burned into his body heal, and it loosens off his wrist. That’s the same wrist he was told from day one he could never take it off without dying.

But does he leave it there? NO!

In the last scene, Musashi comes back to Rokudo-chinnoji, where Okuni is now standing in Takamura’s place. He tells her he’s going after Ganryu and Dokyo. (Sequel foreshadowing much?!) She answers with a sword dance and says, “This Onimusha is going to dance at the Shijo Riverbank.” And they both smile.

The end.

DokyoEscapes, claiming her own plan succeeded regardless of Yoshitsune
BenkeiFought again in a stronger form at Rendaino before you enter the castle

Is There a Post-Credits Secret Ending

Short answer: yes. A short scene after the credits shows Okuni cutting through Genma at the temple, with Musashi turning up to critique her form. Too tense, he tells her. She fires it straight back at him. Same bickering they’ve had all game, except now she’s the one wearing a gauntlet.

The key point of the scene is this: Musashi unsheathes his katana, and the frame catches the Oni Gauntlet back on his arm. He took it off, then chose to put it on again, and that choice is the whole character arc in one shot.

What Happens After You Finish the Game

Picking “Continue” from the title screen drops you back in Kyoto right before the finale, with your cleared character’s gear and upgrades intact. So nothing is missable, and you can go collecting the game’s trophies after the credits roll.

Beating the game also unlocks Carnage, the hardest difficulty, which you play through New Game Plus. You also get a panda outfit and a Tsukihashi Wataru mascot outfit. If you don’t like them, you can swap both at any Spirit Mirror though.

One collectible is genuinely locked behind finishing the game: Genma Note 23, Yoshitsune’s note. Reload your cleared save, head to the well behind Rokudo-chinnoji Temple, use Oni Vision to spot it, then Oni Power to pop the chest. It’s the only one of the 23 notes gated this way, and since it’s Yoshitsune’s, it’s probably the closest thing to extra lore on him in the whole game.
